DATE:

SUBJECT:

Authorize the Supervisor and Clerk to enter into an Agreement with Recycle Ann Arbor for more inclusive and expansive recycling services, subject to Township Attorney approval

BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:

Authorize the Supervisor and Clerk to enter into an Agreement with Recycle Ann Arbor for more inclusive and expansive recycling services, subject to Township Attorney approval.

BACKGROUND:

The township has been looking for various ways to enhance its recycling amenities for some time now. This has ranged from working with Washtenaw County to our service provider Republic Services. However, recently we have successfully negotiation an agreement with Recycle Ann Arbor that will vastly improve the quality and quantity of recycling operations in Pittsfield Township.

The attached agreement and flyer outlines the specific improvements that include:

  • Expanding services from only single-family residential to include both multi-unit residents and commercial customers
  • Expanding from limited use (1/year) to unlimited access to Recycle Ann Arbor's facilities
  • Significant expansion of materials accepted for recycling
  • Miscellaneous public and municipal benefits, as outlined

The current participation rate by Pittsfield residents is 2-3 percent. Recycle Ann Arbor expects that, with the new agreement, there will likely be an increase in participation of about 15-25 percent. This will, of course, translate to a significant increase in the amount of materials recycled and resultant pollutants removed from our waste stream and ending up in our landfills.

To better manage this program and make it easier for Pittsfield Township's customers, all eligible customers will automatically receive a laminated voucher card to be presented at the time of drop off at the station, eliminating the need for customers to physically pick up a voucher each year from Township Hall.
