SUBJECT:

Approve Pedestrian Street Lighting Project Proposal Per DTE recommendations for a cost not to exceed $50,000 including contingency

BOARD ACTION REQUESTED:

Approve Pedestrian Street Lighting Project Proposal Per DTE recommendations for a cost not to exceed $50,000 including contingency.

BACKGROUND:

Since 2009, the township has been working towards the goals and objectives outlined in the Master Plan which include improving non-motorized transportation and safety. These goals have led us to install non-motorized greenways, complete sidewalk improvements and gap filling, and install several mid-block crossings for improved pedestrian safety. An area that has not yet been addressed, however, is lighting near existing crosswalks and mid-block crossings.

Recently we have received an onslaught of feedback from residents about pedestrian safety and the need for sufficient lighting to enhance the visibility of pedestrians in crosswalks at night. There have been a number of reports of "close calls" along Golfside Road where the pedestrian crossings are nearly impossible to see and a tragic accident occurred at Packard and Dalton that emphasized the need for streetlighting to be added to pedestrian crossings throughout our community.

We have worked with DTE Energy to get their recommendations for how to sufficiently light each pedestrian crossing based on best practices and lighting standards, and developed the attached proposal which includes new street lighting adjacent to pedestrian crossings at 20 locations. Each location is unique and will require additional field review to determine the final fixtures and details which is why we have included a generous contingency for a total project cost not to exceed $50,000.
