RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH 2021 POVERTY EXEMPTION GUIDELINES



January 27, 2021


At a Regular Meeting of the Township Board of Pittsfield Charter Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan, held at the Township Administration Building located at 6201 W. Michigan Avenue, in said Township, on January 27, 2021 at 6:30 PM.

The following preamble and resolution were offered by ___________ and supported by ____________.

WHEREAS, persons who, in the judgment of the Board of Review, by reason of poverty, are unable to contribute to the public charge are eligible for exemption in whole or part from taxation under Public Act 390, 1994 (MCL 211.7u); and

 

 WHEREAS, pursuant to MCL 211.7u(2)(e) and (4), the adoption of guidelines to establish poverty exemptions is within the purview of the township board; and

 

 WHEREAS, the township Board does adopt the 2021 Poverty Exemption Policy and Guidelines, as presented by the township Assessor, and attached to this resolution;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Pittsfield Charter Township Board of Trustees adopts the following poverty thresholds as of Dec. 31, 2020, for the poverty exemption guidelines for 2021 assessments as per the guidelines aforementioned. The income levels shall not be set lower than the annual federal poverty standards.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, to be eligible for the exemption, persons must meet the asset guidelines, whereas total household non-liquid assets other than the principal residence cannot exceed a cash value of $25,000, savings and other liquid assets are limited to $1,000.

 

 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Review shall follow the above stated 2021 Poverty Exemption Policy and Guidelines in granting or denying an exemption, with the exemptions granted being limited to 100% reduction to taxable value or 50% reduction to taxable value or 25% reduction to taxable value or any other percentage reduction to taxable value approved by the State Tax Commission.
